For any technical related issues like crashing, graphic issues or similar experiences, here you will find some steps that will help you get back into the game!
Verify game files
- From the Library section, right-click on the game and select Properties from the menu,
- Select Installed Files and click the Verify integrity of game files... button,
- Steam will verify the game's files.
Remove all mods and related files
STEAM Workshop Mods and/or changes for program files could be stopping the game functioning correctly for instance, the developer of the mod has not updated their mod for the new/updated version of the game.
Try deactivating/deleting mods to see if this resolves your issue.
Please note: some older Total War titles are modded by manually adding files to the game folders. These need to be removed manually instead through the game launcher or Steam Workshop.
Update your Windows operating system
Your operating system could be missing important modules/files as required for both the game client and your game to function correctly. Please see instructions below on how to check for updates:
-
Windows® 11
Start Menu > Settings >Windows Update> Check for updates
-
Windows® 10
Start Menu > Settings > Update & Security settings > Windows Update > Check for updates
Update your graphics drivers
Some of the most common game crashing and bugs are a result of old or incompatible drivers.
The lack of an up-to-date system can lead to lag, system errors or even a system crash (BSOD).
To check whether you are using the latest graphics drivers (including sound), please refer to our driver support article.
Try the game with compatibility mode for an older OS
Due to the age of some of our titles, they might not be fully compatible with current operating systems. In such instances, you can try to launch the game in compatibility with an older OS.
- Go to Steam Library and right-click on your Total War game
- Go to Properties
- Go to tab "Installed files"
- Click on "Browse"
- Right click on the Total War (game logo) executable
- Open the 'Properties'
- Go to the "Compatibility" tab
Here, select "Run this program in compatibility mode for :" and try different OS to see which works best for your game.
Key exchange in case of issues with physical copies
Please note that SEGA Support is not able to exchange your physical copy for a Steam key.
