What are drivers? How do I update them?

Out-of-date drivers can cause a wide variety of issues, more specifically drivers relating to Video and Sound, and are typically the first things to check when experiencing issues with a game.

What is a Driver?

A driver is software that allows your Windows to communicate with the hardware i.e. video card, that is within or that is connected to your computer.

Note: Even a recently purchased computer may not be using latest drivers!

The instructions below will help you to confirm the brand and model of your video and sound card devices as well as their driver date and version:

1. From the Windows desktop, press and hold the Windows Key (key with Microsoft Logo/Symbol) and the R Key together at the same time to open the Run Window,

2. Type DXDIAG and click OK:

Note: Click No if you are asked to check whether your drivers have been digitally signed.

3. From the DirectX Diagnostic Tool window, click on either Display or Sound:

4. The upper left box headed ‘Devices’ shows the make and model of card; the right box headed ‘Drivers’ shows the driver version number:

5. Visit the driver manufacturer's website to obtain the most up-to-date driver. Contact the driver manufacturer for assistance with updating the driver. If the computer is under warranty, contact the computer manufacturer.
