How to make sure that an anti-virus program isn't interfering with Steam/Epic/Microsoft Store/Xbox app or Football Manager?

Occasionally due to updates or system configuration, anti-virus programs have been known to interfere with Steam and Football Manager.

Because of this, we recommend if you encounter issues, setting up your anti-virus to make sure it is not conflicting with the game. Please add Steam and Football Manager to your exceptions. How to do this will depend on your anti-virus, we very much suggest you searching online on the anti-virus’s website for details on how to do this.

For clarification by default Steam and Football Manager will be installed in the following locations:

Steam – C:\Program Files(x86)\Steam

Football Manager - C:\Program Files(x86)\Steam\steamapps\common\[Football Manager title]

If you think it’s your anti-virus causing a problem with the game, it may be worth following the instructions below and then completely uninstalling the anti-virus program.

Before uninstalling an active anti-virus program, we recommend turning on Windows Firewall/Windows Defender. On OS’s earlier than Windows 8 or 8.1 we’d recommend installing Microsoft Security Essentials which is solid, free and doesn't conflict with Steam or FM. If you run Windows 8.1, 10 or 11 you will already have Windows Defender installed, we would not suggest installing another anti-virus as well as this can sometimes cause conflicting issues.

Once you have setup your anti-virus as above (either with exceptions or uninstalled), we’d suggest uninstalling and reinstalling Football Manager.

Both the Microsoft Store and Xbox app are part of the Windows default apps. Both applications and Football Manager are stored in a hidden folder within C:\Program Files\WindowsApps. As this is a default hidden folder, we do not recommend you to temper with the folders in any way.
